Hogback Christmas in July (23-24 July) is a yearly event which takes place in the small town of Hogsback in the Eastern Cape Province. This event has many activities which range from ox-wagon rides, choirs and of course, the ever popular craft market.

The Fred Hollows Foundation South Africa was invited to set up a stall at this craft market, which get us an opportunity to promote our work to the broader community, while raising awareness about eye health and eye care services available across the province. Three staff members took turns managing the stall, and took their time talking to the hundreds of people who made a stop at the stall to learn about eye care services and our cause. Simple eye tests were offered to all who visited the FHFSA stall.

A Round Table Indaba of the Provincial Leadership

The Board of Directors facilitated a session to engage principals in the ECBPPP on a dynamic and solutions-oriented exchange between politicians and senior public service administrators. The proposed high level/roundtable discussions were viewed as the all essential renewal for future planning, development, and implementation of sustainable provincial eye care programmes, predicated on the three core strategies of disease control, human resource development, and infrastructure development, incorporating the principles of primary health care.

In recognition of a decade of service: taking Fred's legacy to the Khomani San
a FHFSA coordinated eye care blitz in Mier Sub-District

Friends of the Khomani San in Askham (Mier Sub-District), Siyanda District in the Northern Cape Province approached the Fred Hollows Foundation South Africa for assistance when they noticed that several elders in the community had become blind due to cataract disease.

To mark a decade of service since its incorporation in South Africa and as an act of honouring Fred's legacy, the Fred Hollows Foundation South Africa took up the request and ran an eye care blitz which would give an opportunity of sight restoration to the Khomani San community.
